#GotMySix: My swim class buddies

By HPRC Contributor

I’ve never been a big fan of exercise. And I wasn’t someone who participated in sports activities. But after having had a stroke at the age of 32 that left me with a left-sided hemiparesis, I love my adaptive swim class!

Beyond getting exercise, the real reason I go every week is for the social interaction. The class is for persons with physical challenges ranging from stroke to multiple sclerosis (MS) to traumatic brain injury (TBI), etc. It’s an amazing program, where class participants work at their own paces and abilities. The program is run by volunteers from the community who provide individual assistance to keep everyone safe—and ensure no one drowns in the pool.

The sense of camaraderie and caring among participants and volunteers keep me coming back every week. In the hot tub after class, we catch up with each other’s lives too. Not only does everyone in the swim class #GotMySix, but I “got their six” as well.
